SIGHT NIGHT

WHAT A NIGHT SIGHT!

When the sun goes down on Saturday, November 20th. The light from hundreds of headlamps will bob and weave along the Bow River Pathway as enthusiasts and supporters of visually impaired Albertans join in sight night – a fun run after dark.

Raising funds and awareness for the Alberta Sport and Recreation Association for the Blind (ASRAB), sight night is more than just another run. It is a vision-optional event. Runners who are visually impaired will share the path with sighted runners. The after-dark timing makes it a more even playing field!

sight night is a brand new event, making its debut in Calgary. When the sun goes down on Saturday, November 20, 2010, participants will gather at Eau Claire Market for an 8K run/3K walk on the Bow River Pathway.

All registered runners receive a complimentary headlamp – the sight night light!

sight night is a means to funding self-sufficiency for ASRAB and to creating more public awareness of the programs and support it offers.

sight night was initiated by Kevin Kaminski, a blind athlete and retired Goalball-Paralympian. Kaminski’s motivation is to make sure other visually impaired Albertans have the same opportunities. “It has been a privilege for me to be supported by ASRAB for 25 years and to have had amazing opportunities to compete, travel, learn about myself. I want to ensure that those similar types of opportunities continue to exist for visually impaired Albertans in the future…and that can only happen if ASRAB continues to have a strong financial foundation.”

ASRAB’s goal is to make sight night an annual, signature event that will provide on-going funding for sport and recreation programs.

LOOK WHO ELSE IS RUNNING!

Mayor Dave Bronconnier and Mr. Jose Neto are Honourary Co-Chairs of sight night and will lead off the charge of the light brigade on November 20th  – with the Mayor as Neto’s guide runner. Calgarians will recall that Neto is the Brazilian student and innocent bystander blinded by gunshot in 2008.

WHAT sight night SUPPORTS

Funds raised through sight night will allow ASRAB to continue to develop and provide programs and support for visually impaired Albertans of all ages and athletic ability.

ASRAB has been active in the community for 35 years and currently has 200 members, half of whom are visually impaired. The organization has an impressive track record in bringing sport and recreation opportunities to children, youth and adults.

  • In 2009, ASRAB provided over 500 hours of coaching to visually impaired athletes.  It continues to provide coaching development.
  • In 2010, ASRAB hosted the National Goalball Championships – a return of nationals to Alberta for a sport unique to visually impaired athletes.
  • In 2009, ASRAB hosted the National Lawn Bowling Championships – the third time nationals were held in Alberta.
  • In 2004 ASRAB developed a junior Goalball program and continues to be a strong proponent and contributor to the establishment of a national junior program. ASRAB currently also offers a children’s Goalball program.
  • ASRAB has sent 28 visually impaired Albertans to the Paralympic Games since 1975 – 11 for Goalball, 7 for swimming, 8 for athletics and 2 for wrestling.
  • Leading up to sight night, ASRAB will facilitate a training program for visually impaired athletes with guide runners.
  • Through the success of sight night, ASRAB will continue its efforts to connect visually impaired Albertans with community organizations that have expertise in other sport and/or recreational activities they are interested in. To date it has provided opportunities to experience the thrill of riding a tandem bike, of cross-country skiing, hiking and more.
  • ASRAB will introduce a brand new initiative in 2010 aimed at introducing a wide range of activity-based, experiential opportunities specifically to children and teens who are visually impaired.
