Kinsmen Sports Centre
When the sun goes down on Saturday, September 29, 2012 the light from hundreds of headlamps will bob and weave along the North Saskatchewan River Pathways as enthusiasts and supporters of visually impaired Albertans join in sight night – a fun run after dark. sight night, presented by Flaman Fitness, is more than just another run it is a vision-optional event that raises funds and awareness for the Alberta Sports and Recreation Association for the Blind (ASRAB).
Enthusiastic participants will gather at the Kinsmen Sports Centre for a 5 km or 8 km run and a 3 km walk on the North Saskatchewan River Pathway and all registrants will receive a high quality headlamp – the sight night light! Visually impaired runners will share the path with sighted runners and the after-dark timing will make it a more even playing field!
sight night Edmonton was initiated by Dean Kozak. Dean has been involved in recreation and competitive sport with ASRAB for many years and participated in four Paralympics winning a Silver medal in the sport of Goalball (Atlanta 1996). Dean’s ultimate desire is to provide blind and visually impaired individuals the same opportunities he had to be active and learn how to compete in a multitude of environments with confidence, competence and poise.
LOOK WHO ELSE IS RUNNING!
Mayor Stephen Mandel and multiple Summer & Winter Paralympic Gold Medalist Viviane Forest will lead the charge of the light brigade on September 29th – with the Mayor as Viviane’s guide. Mayor Stephen Mandel and Viviane Forest are eager supporters of ASRAB and recognize the importance of providing quality recreation and sport opportunities to the visually impaired.
sight night is designed so anyone who participates will have a unique and memorable experience. You can choose to register for the 3 km walk or take on a new challenge and register for the 5 km or 8 km fun run. Regardless of what distance you choose, you are guaranteed to have a great time!
