Seeing Ice Dogs

The Seeing Ice Dogs are an adult team made up of blind, visually impaired and sighted members.  The goalies are completely blind and wear black helmets to designate this.

Players wearing red helmets are legally blind, which means they have less than 10% of normal vision.  Those players with white helmets have normal vision and help set up the play for the visually impaired players.

The Ice Dogs use a metal puck with ball bearings in it which makes noise so the blind and visually impaired players can focus on it and react to the sound of it.  Visually impaired players also react to the sounds of sighted player instructions, the sound of the ice and the noise the puck makes as it hits boards and sticks.  You will be amazed at how few collisions there are as the players react to verbal cues as well as other noise cues such as hearing the opponent’s skates and even breathing.

The Seeing Ice Dogs play exhibition games with Old -Timer rules in Calgary and in Southern Alberta.  They are always looking for fun and or charity games to play.

The Seeing Ice Dogs allow blind and visually impaired hockey players to play the same game we all love and enjoy. With some adaptations and some help from sighted players you can see for yourself that blind hockey looks a lot like normal hockey.
